Prophetic pointers…

ShortNotes

So you’ve got a desire to see more of the prophetic gift or ministry operating in your life? Here are a few things to consider as you step out in faith…

Desire! A strange way to start a page on prophesy. If you are to step out in the gifts of the Spirit, the starting point is in the asking – but the asking starts with desiring to be used by God in this way. The very fact that you are reading this page suggests that you probably do have a desire to be used by God in prophecy, or in a greater measure. Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. (1 Cor 14:1)

Be Careful! One of the things that is useful if you are not used to stepping out publicly in the prophetic is to have someone that you can quickly share your contribution with.

Problem: If God has spoke then surely what you have will always be right?

Well, in a simplistic way ‘yes’, but the thing that you may struggle with is how to share things wisely.

There is a practical teaching that has been a great help to many and which lays an emphasis on the prophetic being divided into three core elements; REVELATION, INTERPRETATION and APPLICATION.

Talking to others helps us to not go beyond what Scripture teaches

” I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another” 1 Corinthians 4:6

This is where an understanding of revelation, interpretation and application is so helpful, but we do need to be clear that this is not a teaching of scripture and bind ourselves unnecessarily to it.

It does make sense though and is very useful. God may show you something in prayer and which may come in something of an impression. Praying and asking God how to interpret what He is showing you is a wise step.

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see an almond branch.” Jer 1:11

The word of the LORD came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north.” Jer 1:13

Jer 24:3; Amo 7:8; Amo 8:2; Zec 4:2; Zec 5:2

The last step (if you can do something so clinical!)is application; what do or should people do with what has been shared?

This really is important as when God speaks to us it is never ambiguous, He is not the author of confusion.

Devour God’s Word! There is a saying”GI-GO” Garbage in, garbage out. You need to spend time reading God’s Word, feeding your spirit-man with the living and active Words of God. The Bible is unlike any book on the planet. It pulsates with life. It is the live word of God. Let it permeate your entire being, feed on it, delight in it. The Scriptures are inspired by God in a way that you are not. Everything is judged by the Word of God including our the intent of our hearts.

Nothing compares to it. I encourage people to develop good reading habits. One of the best ways that I have discovered for myself is to have five bookmarks in a Bible placed (at the start and then move them!)in Genesis, Isaiah, Psalms, Matthew and Acts. Then according to your mood read some history, poetry, prophecy, gospel or teaching… the essential thing is read the Bible. Not because you have to, or you have Bible reading targets to reach, but because you want God to speak to you, and you want to learn from Him.

Sometimes I read a passage of scripture for days and days. It can grab your heart if you let it. If you are finding it difficult to read the scriptures then ask God for help. Tell Him you want to learn from the scriptures, to be obedient and do what is right. Sometimes God will answer immediately, sometimes it may take a few days, but the answer will never be no.

Be praying. Prayer throws things right open. It shows where your real values are. Do you believe that God hears and answers prayer and that nothing happens but by prayer? Well, what you believe is reflected in your prayer life. Again, don’t come to God just to get ’stuff’. God wants you to earnestly seek Him and make your petitions known to Him. God wants to hear your voice! I want to let you into a secret here – don’t pay a fortune to attend conferences on how to be an intercessor – an intercessor as far as scripture is concerned, is one who prays for another. The entire Body of Christ is called to that, without exception.

As you pray for others God will begin to give you impressions and thoughts concerning these people. Your focus is to pray for them, as you pray for them God may begin to show you some of the plans He has for them…
